Hannah, this is amazing. Is there similar data for non-food related trade, like wood products (e.g. wood chips for energy generation)?

For the Sustainable Foods Summit in Amsterdam I gave a speech about deforestation also using some of the intel created by you and ourworldindata. I find it very encouraging to see that our global efforts driven by regulation and private companies are showing effect. Of course you can always argue it isn't fast enough, but it is happening and if we keep that trajectory it feels as if it is looking good as well.

This is really interesting work, thanks for pursuing it! The fact that deforestation is so much more heavily tilted towards domestic vs exports was quite surprising given the framing usually present in the media. Did any reasons emerge from the data about why imported deforestation has declined so much in Europe? Regulations? Consumer pressures? Something else? Might make an interesting follow-up piece.

This graphic is amazing. I wish I’d had it when I used to teach Sustainability at my university. I had a similar graphic that showed the flow of virtual water through trade in ag products. It’s ironic that one of the largest export crops for arid western US states is the water-intensive alfalfa (to Saudi and China).

It would be useful to consider how this improves our understanding of other calculations of emissions calculated on the basis of consumption within a territory rather than production.

This is amazing! Needs to be shared widely. I wonder if we could explore this per company? Have you met Dr. Aline Soterroni from Nature based Solutions Initiative? I think this could be a great collaboration.
